The 2019 Outspoken Summit builds on the momentum of the 2018 summit, which sold out two months early thanks to strong programming, keynotes, and the participation of Meredith Atwood, Kathryn Bertine, Dr. Shaunna Payne Gold, Anne Hed, Rachel Joyce, Meredith Kessler, Julie Moss, and Dr. Stacy Sims, among others.

This year’s summit programming will take participants on a journey of self-reflection, as they consider their personal reasons for attending Outspoken; vision, as they set goals for the world they want to see; and action, as they learn techniques to lead from inside and create the positive change they envision for women in sports and sports business. Outspoken participants will develop their own leadership style over the summit and get guidance from women leaders inside and outside of triathlon on how to set and pursue their own personal goals.

We will reflect together on the best ways to facilitate change and create the inclusive environment we crave in the sport we love.

“The response to Outspoken’s inaugural summit demonstrates how vital the summit is to advance gender equity and diversity in triathlon,” said summit cofounder Dr. Lisa Ingarfield. “Meaningful change cannot be enacted overnight. It must be thoughtful and include a multiplicity of voices. As the adage goes, it takes a village. The 2019 Outspoken Summit aims to grow this powerful village of committed and outspoken triathletes through self-reflection, in-depth discussion, and solution-oriented thinking.”

Dr. Sara Gross, summit cofounder and Ironman champion, commented, “Through a series of thought-provoking talks and breakout sessions, 2019 summit attendees will be encouraged to look inward and will be given the tools needed to develop their own personal and organizational leadership styles. We will reflect together on the best ways to facilitate change and create the inclusive environment we crave in the sport we love.”

Sport is a model for and a reflection of who we are as a society, which means we must address discrimination and inequality head on and without apology.

“’Sport is a human right,’ according to the International Olympic Committee, and I agree,” said Dr. Rachel McKinnon, elite cyclist and transgender rights activist. “Everyone should have access to recreational and competitive sport. All athletes should feel welcome and appreciated for who they are. Sport is a model for and a reflection of who we are as a society, which means we must address discrimination and inequality head on and without apology. I believe the Outspoken Summit will help improve equity within triathlon—and in broader society. Join me in supporting Outspoken with #SportsIsAHumanRight.”

“It’s time,” said Sally Edwards, one of triathlon’s pioneering women athletes and coaches. “It’s time that both equality and equity are key focuses of triathlon’s national governing body, of race directors, and of the coaches and athletes of our sport. Outspoken helps to honor and advance women’s participation both in triathlon and in sports.”

“I feel humbled and honored to be named a keynote speaker for the Outspoken Summit,” said Sarah True, professional triathlete. “This weekend will be filled with thought-provoking conversation and celebration. I’m looking forward to being a part of this movement.”

Triathlete is honored to be a part of Outspoken’s continued effort to elevate female voices in endurance sports,” said Erin Beresini, Editor-in-Chief of Triathlete Magazine.

This year’s Summit adds two 6-hour pre-summit workshops. One session will take a much deeper dive into inclusivity and diversity in sports, and the other will address how to become a professional triathlete.

Outspoken 2019 moves to a larger venue in order to accommodate more participants. This year’s summit location will be the Arizona State University Sun Devil Fitness Complex in Tempe. Registrants get access to all the world-class fitness facilities at the Sun Devil Fitness Complex.
